In today's lesson we are introduced to CALL. No, it is not the art of calling people through the phone. It is an acronym for what we call as Computer Assisted Language Learning. It is an area where technology assist user in empowering multiple skill such as listening, writing, speaking and reading skill. With the advancement of technology and the widespread usage of internet nowadays everyone can literally get whatever information they need. With this, anyone can be anything they desire to be. Especially in terms of learning new language, all it takes is to go into the web and search up for free courses or maybe just informal videos that speak about the particular subject.

There are basically a few type of programme under CALL, namely CALL specific software, web-based learning materials, generic software and computer mediated communication. All of these programme enable an easy excess for learner as well as instructor to receive and distribute materials. For example, through forum which is done asynchronous allow everyone with the same interest to get together and discuss without having to physically present themselves. Aside from that, for people who prefer a face to face conversation they will be benefited with a synchronous computer mediated communication like web cam online chat.

All in all, CALL opens up a door to a new learning experience for learners as well as instructors. It is a good news that we are moving towards a more conventional approach to learning rather than relying only in classroom. Who knows, someday we might totally and ultimately not require teacher and students to be under the same roof to get the class session done.

Until then, don't forget to give your seat to those who needs!

Love, Ummu
